Enriching World Percussion Workshop
Our energetic and talented facilitator leads the young people in this music workshop, World Percussion. In this drum workshop, Mitch will be teaching young people how to play traditional, authentic percussion rhythms from across the globe using indigenous instruments.
In this music workshop for schools, students will be learning about different percussion styles from various cultures. In particular, Mitch will focus on percussion from Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Egypt and North and West Africa. From the samba to salsa, taiko to tabla, this drum workshop is an enriching experience for all students. Global music education is an incredible way to feel a sense of global community. Perhaps young people will realise that while cultures, traditions and music are different throughout the world, the feeling that music provides is universal! These are some of the experiences we hope to offer in our music workshops for schools.
What happens on this workshop?
The World Percussion music workshop will begin with students warming up with body percussion. Mitch will introduce the students to percussion and its use in different cultures all over the world. He will demonstrate various types of music on traditional instruments and use pictures and videos to show students the incredible reach that music has. Young people will learn about different instruments and how to play traditional rhythms and breaks from different parts of the world. One of the most positive activities for young people taking part is creating their own piece of music in this drum workshop. If they feel strongly about their composition, they have the option to record it as they perform.
What areas does this workshop cover on the national curriculum?
All of Mitch' workshops cover links with: - Music/ Geography/ Maths/ Communication/ History.
Through world percussion it is easy to inspire topic based projects such as Africa, South America etc. Even food and various celebrations that happen throughout the world.
What will young people get from this workshop?
Young people will gain a wealth of knowledge in this drum workshop. By giving them an opportunity to play real instruments collected from around the world, it automatically sparks a global interest. Young people readily see how different cultures celebrate and create music, and in turn they compare their own culture and feel a sense of place. On a more localised scale, students learn how to express themselves through the use of percussion instruments and how to play together as a group. All of these positive activities will help young people raise their confidence levels and expand their knowledge and interests about music and other cultures.
