Wicked Beat-Breakers Music Workshop
Here at Street Style Surgery we are excited to offer students the chance to check out Beat-Breakers, a music workshop that teaches young people the art of beatboxing. Led by our expert beatboxers this workshop instructs students on how to create vocal percussion sounds.
Beatboxing is a vocal exercise in which the artist imitates percussive sounds. It can be traced back centuries to India, China and Africa, but modern day beatboxing refers to mimicry of the first generation of electronic drum machines. It originated in the United States in the 1980s, with Doug E. Fresh being known as the first “human beatbox”. In the 1990s, beatboxing made its way over to the UK.
What happens on this school workshop?
In this music workshop, there are many positive activities for young people to engage in. This workshop will start off with an introduction and beatboxing demonstration by our beatboxer, followed by a short icebreaker exercise so students can feel more comfortable around one another. Using worksheets and verbal instruction, our beatboxer will teach students popular vocal techniques such as the kick drum, hi hat and snare.
By participating in our music workshops, students will have the chance to work in groups, create their own beats and perform in front of their peers, both individually and as a group. To encourage young people to continue to make their own beats, Faz will show students how to make their own beats as well as a technique for writing them down.
What will young people get from this workshop?
There are many benefits to our music workshops for schools. In our Beat-Breakers music workshop, young people will learn beatboxing skills, how to support and encourage their peers, how to multi-task in respect to both music and life and how to work together to create something bigger than oneself. Students will walk away from this music workshop with the firm belief that they can achieve any goal they set out to accomplish, as long as they pursue it with commitment and passion.
