An introduction to Body Art, Theatrical and Special FX Make-up Workshop

Time for your young people to get creative and experiment with a face and body art kit on each other and sample our theatrical, special FX make-up workshop which covers many of the technical disciplines in the face and body art workshop but focus closely on the human anatomy and using contouring for the stage alongside character development so you can learn how to create dramatic characters and artistic make-up for the stage


What Happens in this Body Art & Theatrical Make-up workshop?

Designed for any level of ability and experience, the work shop will be split into 2 stages:

The history of body art, techniques and materials, working with the human form.

Practical painting, with techniques practiced on arms and/or faces, and drawings created of their face and body art ideas.

During the 3 hour workshop students will cover:

Sponge techniques, including stippling, blending, double loading and dragging.

Brush techniques, including angles, detail, double loading, kabuki work, tear drops and blending.

Anatomy and contours of the human form, placement on the figure and balancing your design.

Use of colour, including colour selection, contrasting colours, layering paint, adding highlights and shadows.

Health and safety including face and body art hygiene, understanding cross infection and prevention, model safety and consideration, allergic reactions and time scales.

Preparing and cleaning the skin, including making prints of small work.

Sealing work, glitter and powders and capturing your work digitally.

 

Special course features will include:

World body art information, with cultural and historical roots.

How to make a career in face and body art, considerations if capturing your art with photography and further development opportunities.

Inspiration and ideas, tips on how to come up with creative concepts, influences and possible studies.

All students will be able to experiment and practice with a face and body art kit, with access to a range of professional face and body paints, ranges of sponges and brushes, and different types of glitter.

A handout will be provided that they can take home to keep, with face and body paint tips and tricks, face and body templates and colour charts to create their own designs, and a recommendation list for face and body art materials and artist studies.

Theatrical make-up workshops cover many of the technical disciplines in the face and body art workshop but focus closely on the human anatomy and using contouring for the stage alongside character development so you can learn how to create dramatic characters and artistic make-up for the stage.

What sizes does this Body Art & Theatrical Make-up workshop?

3 hour workshops which can be combined to a 4 hour workshop covering one character for theatrical make-up. Additional character work for theatrical make-up and face paint designs can also following the initial skills training, with special effects offerings such as cuts, bruises and wounds.

 

How many young people can this Body Art & Theatrical Make-up workshop accommodate?

10-15 comfortably, this can be an extended group with additional assistants as support (accommodating 30) and additional material costs covered, the same applying for additional follow up workshop areas such as special effects if groups want to continue and learn extra skills and designs.
