Diamond Jubilee workshops for schools and youth groups
The workshops would take place over two days. Dependent upon the structure of the school day, the process would run as follows.
Morning day one - Years 1 and 2 - Tradition & Celebration
The children will take part in a drama activity where they create their own crazy street party, using physical theatre to create the elements of a street party, food, decorations, games and entertainment.
Alongside this the children will also have done some art activities where they will design bunting and table decorations for the party, learning about the Union Jack and other symbols and emblems associated with Britain, the monarchy ad celebration.
Afternoon day one - Years 3 and 4 - The Queen's reign: 60 years of the UK
This session will involve the group creating their own interactive timeline of the last 60 years. They will have the opportunity to think about the events that they wish to explore in greater detail and the ones that mean the most to them. They will create this timeline using visual art and drama to bring specific events to life.
Morning day two - Years 5 and 6 - Being British: Freedom and friendship
This workshop will involve the young people learning, thinking and talking about Britain today and the nature of our society. We will help the children to think about how our country has absorbed and welcomed many people of other cultures over the years (while accepting and recognising that there have been and still remain problems with this), how different elements of different countries are an integral part of our culture and how we can use the Diamond Jubilee as a way of celebrating the achievements of our country as a whole. This will be done through drama activities that will explore notions of acceptance and friendship and art activities that will create a collage of what our country is today.
Afternoon day two
Preparing for and performing the final pieces.
