Making Musical Instruments in our Percussion Workshop
Street Style Surgery's music workshops are flourishing with new opportunities! Students will gain insight into recycling valuable materials to create percussion instruments. Seeing first-hand how everyday materials have such a wide range of uses, it will encourage young people to be responsible and start recycling. All of the materials being used, whether recycled or everyday objects will be supplied or can be collected by your pupils.
What is unique in this workshop is that by making musical instruments with children, they are opening themselves up to different sounds from all over the globe. Percussion is a global music, from the tribes of Africa to the indigenous peoples of New Zealand and Polynesia, percussion is prevalent around the globe even though it is used to create such unique sounds.
Students will gain a lot from this music workshop!
What happens on this workshop?
Mitch will do a warm up with the students to get them in the music-making mood with some body percussion. He will then introduce young people to pre-made instruments, from rainmakers to shakers and jumbo chimes to thumb pianos, getting them excited about making musical instruments!
After the demonstration of the numerous possibilities, students will be able to make their own percussion instruments. When everyone finishes creating their instruments, Mitch will teach students a few rhythms and breaks to give them a feel for how they can utilise their unique instrument. Finally, students will have the option to perform in front of the group if they feel up for it.
