Fun and Rewarding Photography Workshop

Among our creative activities for children there is the option to book our photography workshop.  This Issue Based Participatory Photography workshop educates young people on the functions of their camera and techniques they can use to achieve original photographs.

An amazing creative workshop in which to participate, young people are able to document their own perspectives; we are all curious to see how others view the world we share.  When young people realise that their views may very well be different from others', there is a great opportunity for mutual respect and personal growth.

What happens on this workshop?

The workshop will start off with our creative practitioner introducing the subject of participatory photography.  Young people are encouraged to join in on the conversation to present their own opinions and experiences.  Next they will introduce cameras, specifically the basic functions of a camera, different settings that are available and the symbols on the camera itself. The fun, creative activities begin with a treasure hunt!  Students can explore their surroundings to find shapes, colours or abstract ideas and will use their findings to create a storyboard of photo ideas.

Working together, young people will brainstorm on how to visualise their ideas on the topic and then take photographs that explore their chosen theme.  After presenting photos to the class, the workshop leader will discuss more involved aspects of photography, such as lighting and composition.  Students will finally be able to edit, caption and print their own photographs.

What will young people get from this workshop?
Young people will not only gain training in camera functions and techniques, but they'll be able to explore their own thoughts, experiences and perceptions through photography.  By learning new skills and expressing themselves in a supportive, open environment, this creative workshop builds confidence in young people.  Depending on the size and duration of the workshop, students will be able to take home at least one captioned image or up to a whole photo album of captioned photos.
