We are a Specialist Arts and Technology High School in Salford for pupils with moderate learning difficulties.Sissy has worked with our Year 9 pupils for a seven-week project during their D&T: Textiles lessons. The pupils brought in items of clothing from home e.g. t-shirts and jeans, and they personalised them during workshop sessions with Sissy.
The experience has been valuable for both staff and students. Sissy brought in new ideas and approaches and as staff, we have worked side-by-side sharing our expertise and learning from one another.
The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working first hand with a fashion designer and have been motivated to do well and think creatively. They responded well to a different approach to design and have been willing to experiment and accept advice. They were all proud of their results and keen to try them on and show other people. The project was a great confidence booster and Sissy’s personality, positive approach and youth injected credibility to the work.
“Working with Sissy was good because it was something different and we don’t do it all the time.”
“Sissy was good fun. You could talk to her.”
“I wish Sissy could work at our school all the time.”
I would highly recommend other schools to take advantage of any opportunity to work on a similar project with Sissy and hope to be able to work with her again here at Oakwood in the near future. I think that the sort of work that Sissy does would fit in well with the new approach to education that is coming in through Diplomas.
Thank you and I hope we can work together again soon.

Testimonial ... From pupil who took part in a workshop based in my studio
A young person from Manor High. I am 16. I went on the Recycled Fashion Week. I never done anything like that before. It changed my life. It has opened up for me all the things I can do that I never thought was possible for someone like me. I have never done a lot with my time mainly because I get very stressed because of my dyslexia. I only felt comfortable with things I knew and felt I needed a safe environment. Until the POG recycled project, I thought that meant being in school or staying at home. I have never thought I could do anything special with my life until last half term project (the POG recycled project). That project showed me that a safe environment could be something other than being at school or home, and it could involve doing something new in a new place. Also I learnt that I am artistic and that my dyslexia doesn’t have to hold me back. The youth workers and the tutor Sissy were very helpful in helping me find ways I could do all the things other people were doing, without looking different or being at a disadvantage.
Testimonial ... 24/7 homless group
I am writing to confirm that Sissy Rooney from the Street Style Surgery project ran a series of workshops from October and November 2007, focused on garment designing with the young people attending the Project 24/7 sessions.Project 24/7 delivers homeless prevention and housing related support to young people aged 14-25 years.
These sessions took place weekly at the Beacon Centre in Salford and the theme of the designs were housing and homelessness, so the completed garments could be also used as a creative consultation exercise to feed into the development of Salford’s Young Persons Housing Plan.
The sessions were well attended overall with a total of 24 young people having a go at designing a garment. The young people really engaged with the creative process and seemed to really enjoy being able to express themselves on the garments. They also had the opportunity to try many different techniques in designing to complete their garments. The sessions were delivered in a very informal and relaxed way, allowing the young people to work at their own pace and skill level.
The project will be finished off by holding a photo shoot in a studio with professional lighting, etc. where the young people can model their garments.
If you would like any further information on the workshops or the project, please feel free to contact me.

DearSissy,
I am writing to confirm that I would be more than happy to recommend your unique service to others.
Your fashion workshop was a great success, enjoyed by everyone who took part and helped to engage the young people about enterprise and the environment.
Indeed of all the workshops held at LimeSideSchool that day yours was the most interactive, inspiring and engaging, as the feedback from the pupils confirmed.
Your 45 minute fashion work (on 15th November 2007) with fifteen 9 to 11 year olds was both professional and accessible and you adequately dealt with the organisational and communications aspects of the work.
Gorse Hill studios is part of Trafford Youth service, and is committed to providing creative arts opportunities for young people aged 11 – 25 years, who live or attend a Trafford school or college.Gorse Hill studios has been focusing on the development of young people using of a variety of music, dance, drama and visual arts as a vehicle, enabling young people to reach their full potential.Through the arts we have been able to challenge and nurture young people's talents for nearly 7 years.
Each summer we have put together a mixture of open access, arts and music activity programmes - these act as taster sessions for the young people to dip their toe into participating in a particular area of interest. These have always had many successes and proven to be very popular.
This summer we made the decision to pilot a new method of offering participants the chance to try out not just one area of interest but by combining dance, drama, music and fashion design the workshop leaders from each art form planned an intense week with the objective that each participant could work as part of a production team to produce a piece of work that would reflect the art forms and skills they had experienced throughout the week.
Having the opportunity to incorporate fashion design with Sissy proved to be a fantastic and exciting challenge to all the participants. They had the opportunity to learn many transferable skills, basic live skills and explore their creative expression throughout the week. As their confidence grew, they began to discover the wealth of knowledge that Sissy was able to teach them - mixing fashion design with music, dance and drama. Each participant was able to get involved at what ever level suited them best, while taking responsibility for a distinct part of the project.
The group’s feedback was extremely positive and although many of the group had regularly participated in dance, drama or music, none of the participants, ranging in age from 11 – 17 yrs, had any experience of discovering the possibilities of the fashion and textile industry. They all agreed they had all learnt a great deal; it had left them all very eager to learn more. The final piece was a small piece of theatre that explored the issue around stereotypes through fashion and also people's desire to buy fashion – they wrote lyrics and recorded a track titled ‘the truth about fashion’. The performance ended with a fashion show and a celebration of their achievements.
