The Street Style Surgery exists to provide a platform for the youth of today and the socially disadvantaged to express themselves creatively though fashion design and clothing, while promoting creativity, innovation, individualism, pride and confidence.
Workshop Outline
The Street Style Surgery’s (TSSS) aim and focus is to host exciting and inspiring fashion workshops in schools, playschemes, after school clubs and organisations who provide services for the young, socially disadvantaged, people with learning and health difficulties and male & female young offenders' institutions. TSSS workshop gives pupils a chance to express their own fashion style. One of the projects consists oftaking a blank garment, e.g. t-shirt and fully customizing it by means of fabric applique, heat transfer and decoration, either to a set theme or to pupils' own individual design tastes. The t-shirts can be decorated by various means, e.g. laser iron-on print outs, fabric cut out letters and shapes, fabric paint, pens and sprays.
The workshops can culminate in mini styled photo-shoots or mini fashion shows within the organisation, to finalize the design and making process, giving the pupils a feel good boost and raising their confidence levels.
The Aims of the Street Style Surgery
To promote pride, confidence and self worth and inspire (young) people to be creative and free-thinking.
To allow pupils to experience a subject matter that they will not normally be exposed to and to promote fashion as a realistic career choice and provide hands on practical experience in the design process.
To provide the ability to manage uncertainty and respond positively to change, to create and implement new ideas and ways of doing things.
To provide young people with the opportunity to be enterprising through the application of their knowledge, skills and attributes — to 'make their mark'.
To encourage respect for other people's contributions and show that learning can be fun.
To develop communication and presentation skills as the workshops will stimulate discussion and encourage pupils to express and share their own ideas and thoughts.
Quote from Miss O’Neill, Business Tutor at WhalleyRangeHigh School
"The students at WhalleyRange 11 - 18 High School have thoroughly enjoyed the textiles workshop run by Sissy. They have developed their design skills, creating a unique and personal piece of clothing.Their confidence levels have been raised immensely as the girls celebrated their success by modelling their work at a school fashion show. This is a fantastic enterprising opportunity that allows the girls to get an insight into the fashion industry as a possible career path or develop an invaluable skill as a life time hobby. We would definitely host this workshop again!"
